On April 26th, Deputy Sikes and three other deputies pulled over a recreational vehicle on Interstate 20 near Augusta. The purpose of the stop was to serve the driver a temporary restraining order related to a domestic violence complaint. The driver was compliant, but when the deputies that had approached the vehicle turned away to return to their vehicles, the now suspect shot and killed Deputy Sikes. Another deputy was shot in the face. As gunfire was exchanged, the wounded deputy was gathered up and transported to the hospital, where he is in critical condition.

The suspect tried to escape in the RV but ran into cable barriers on the side of the highway.

After exhaustive work with drones the suspect was found dead in the camper. A search of the camper revealed pipe bombs and drug paraphernalia.

Deputy Sikes was a seven-year veteran with the Columbia County Sheriff's Office. His wife also serves with the agency.

100% of the funds received by the PBF will go to his widow.
