The North Carolina Police Benevolent Association and the Police Benevolent Foundation are asking for financial support for Officer Steven Cantara with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
Twenty months ago, Officer Cantara was working a traffic accident on I-85. He was in this patrol vehicle blocking a lane of travel for the Highway Patrol as they conducted their investigation. In a moment that would change his life forever, he was hit in the rear by a drunk driver who was going 81 miles per hour. The collision caused the patrol vehicle to crash into the accident car in front of him. The accident caused a massive head injury that is still affecting him today. He also suffered a hematoma in his leg and a tear in his shoulder. The head injury has since caused PTSD, memory loss, vision problems, and balance issues. He has not been able to return to active duty.
Officer Cantara has been married for 26 years and they have three children and one grandchild.
100% of the money received by the PBF will go to help with Officer Cantara's recovery and his family's expenses.
